New sports function building opened in Berlin -Mitte - enrichment for community and sport
A new chapter in the sports landscape of Berlin was written today with the ceremonial opening of the extension on the Holzmarktstraße 55 sports field. The opening took place in the presence of high-ranking personalities such as Stephan Machulik, State Secretary for Housing and Tenant Protection of the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Living, as well as Benjamin Fritz, the district councilor for school and sport in Berlin-Mitte.
The extension building, which is located in the urban development area Karl-Marx-Allee II, was renovated with federal and state funds of the urban development program "Living Centers and Quarters" (LZQ) of around 2.8 million euros. The aim of this project is to expand the sports function as a school -independent sports facility. By creating multi-purpose rooms, additional sports and gymnastics offers are to be made possible, which are not only accessible to the students of the surrounding schools, but also to the general public.

Stephan Machulik emphasized the importance of sport and exercise for the health and well -being of the citizens of Berlin. He emphasized that the expansion of the sports facility at Holzmarktstraße 55 will not only be a place of physical activity, but also to meet and come together.
Benjamin Fritz, the district councilor for school and sport, sees the opening of sports expansion construction as an extremely positive development for the Mitte district and especially for the area around Karl-Marx-Allee. He emphasized that the expansion building should not only enrich the sporting offer, but also serve as a meeting point for people of all ages.
Since 2015, a total of around 16 million euros from the Urban Development Program LZQ have been provided for measures in the Karl-Marx-Allee II area. This underlines the continuous development and promotion of the urban development ensemble of post -war modernism in this area
The Holzmarktstraße sports field, which was built in the 1960s, is the largest sports facility in the funding area and is of great importance for school, club and mass sports. With the extension building, this meaning is further strengthened and the sports landscape of Berlin is expanded to include a modern and versatile contact point.
