New agricultural package brings improvements for climate, species protection and agricultural businesses
The Bundestag has decided on the new agricultural package today. This initiative is regarded as an overdue step towards more climate and species protection and as an improvement in farmers compared to the market powerful food trade. Sascha Müller-Kraenner, Federal Managing Director of German Environmental Aid (DUH), expressed the following:
"The agricultural package is an overdue step towards more climate and species protection- and a better position of farmers compared to the market-powerful food trade."
With the agricultural package, two new eco -regulations are also introduced to close important funding gaps. For example, dairy farms that keep their animals in the pasture will finally receive more financial support for their contribution to environmental protection and animal welfare. However, according to Müller-Kraenner, it is important to create a similar regulation for companies that keep few animals on a lot of pasture. In addition, measures to strengthen biodiversity in agriculture should be better paid, but it remains unclear how exactly this should be implemented. with regret, Müller-Kraenner finds that environmental standards for agriculture have declined in the past few weeks and that mandatory ecological compensation areas have been abolished. According to him, these setbacks cannot be weighed with the new regulations. Another important result of the agricultural package is that customers can no longer avoid bans to protect the producers by using unfairwethisdr trading practices. It is now the responsibility to consistently apply the law and to pursue attempts to circumvent them accordingly. In order to pay for farmers fairly and protect against unfair trading practices, according to Müller-Kraenner, further measures have to be followed, such as a bid of buying at cost-covering prices. The new agricultural package is therefore seen as an important step towards climate and species protection. It closes and confirms the protection of the producers from unfairwethish trading practices. Nevertheless, there are also criticisms, especially with regard to the declining environmental standards for agriculture. It remains to be hoped that further measures will be taken in the future in order to pay for farmers fairly and to further strengthen climate and species protection. Berlin
