The new wedding venue is being ceremoniously opened – come along!
On September 2nd, 2025, the Mitte district office announced that the opening of the redesigned Weddingplatz and the street space along Reinickendorfer Straße would take place on September 10th. From 12 p.m. everyone interested is invited to get an idea of the extensive changes on site. District councilor for order, environment, nature, streets and green spaces, Christopher Schriner, and his colleague for urban development, Ephraim Gothe, pointed out in the press release the importance of the redesign, which is based on the results of continuous citizen participation.
The adjustments to Weddingplatz not only include an increased quality of life for residents and businesses, but also better pedestrian access. Reinickendorfer Straße was narrowed, reducing the number of parking spaces to twelve. The square will also be rededicated as a “play street”. New seating options in the green area and around the nearby church should contribute to the attractiveness of the area. A special eye-catcher will be a fountain with a water feature equipped with 13 jets.
Environmental and nature conservation
As part of the redesign, 49 new trees were also planted to improve the course's environmental footprint. This measure serves as compensation for the 17 trees felled. The vegetation structure was also optimized with site-appropriate, easy-care plants, which is an essential element of climate-friendly urban development. According to the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction, the preservation and development of urban greenery is a joint task that involves all actors - from the federal government to the citizens. Improving urban open spaces is not just a question of aesthetics, but also a response to the challenges of climate change.
The redesign of Weddingplatz is the result of an intensive participation process. Residents, business owners and owners were actively involved to obtain their opinions and suggestions for the redesign. In the period from May to June 2019, both online and analogue surveys were carried out to collect suggestions. A kick-off event in June 2019 provided a platform for exchange between the various stakeholders and thus laid the foundation for today's result.
Financing the transformation
The financing of the extensive construction work carried out over the period from 2019 to 2025 amounts to a total of 2,534,389.46 euros. Of this, 1,907,354.20 euros come from the urban development funding program “Lively Centers and Neighborhoods”, while 627,035.26 euros come from district funds. This financial commitment shows how important the development of urban infrastructure is for the Mitte district.
Those responsible hope that these comprehensive measures will significantly upgrade the district and strengthen social interaction in the neighborhood. Further information about the redesign of Weddingplatz is available online on the Streets and Green Spaces Authority website. The press office of the Mitte district office is available to answer any questions.
When the redesigned square opens on September 10, 2025, citizens can see for themselves the positive changes and take advantage of the new offers.
