New apartments in Pankow: Refugees and Ukrainians are moving in

Beautiful living for refugees in Berlin - 61 apartments built | Regional

On the edge of a former nursery on Kirchstrasse in the Berlin district of Pankow, a new symbol for the arrival and integration of refugees is now rising. Construction has been built here in the past two and a half years, and now the work has been done: 61 modern apartments are ready to record asylum seekers and Ukrainians who will move in at the end of the month.

Mark Seibert, President of the State Office for Refugee Matters (LAF), told BILD: “The people who will live here have a long journey through accommodations of various kinds. The apartments have PVC laminate in wood look and even fitted kitchens, which is no longer a matter of course even in normal Gesobau apartments.

Special feature of the accommodations

Interestingly, small boxes hang on the roof edge of the seven three-storey, poroton stone. These are intended as landing sites for wall sailors who also find asylum. A detail that stands not only symbolically for protection, but also for the integration that is lived here.

During the open house, the visitors were interested in and skeptical. A neighbor from the nearby allotment garden announced that he wanted to invite the new residents to the summer festival to promote community. "I'm skeptical," says a woman. Another adds: "I'm curious."

context and meaning for Berlin

The State Office for Refugee Matters has rented the real estate for five years, and details on the costs remain unnamed due to procurement law. However, the importance of these new properties goes far beyond the building costs: it is a sign of arrival and the new beginning for people who come from difficult circumstances.

When the new residents find a job, they are obliged to pay a fee to the LAF. This serves to cover part of the integration costs and at the same time promote personal responsibility. It is also important to mention that these people have already completed language courses and no longer need comprehensive support. This shows that they are willing to integrate into society and live independently.

overcrowded refugee accommodation

The urgency of such projects becomes clear when you look at the capacity bottlenecks of the simpler accommodation options:

  • arrival center Reinickendorf: 523 regular places and 21 emergency places
  • arrival center Tegel: 4704 places occupied (asylum: 903, Ukraine: 3801), available: 1803
  • Regular accommodations of the state office: 30,938 places occupied; Available: 369
  • emergency accommodation in Tempelhof Thf: 1409 places occupied, available: 135 (hangars 1-3 and parking lot P3)
  • hostels and hotels (room quotas): 2669 places occupied, available: 179

A look into the future shows that an additional 568 places for refugees should be provided at the Askanierring in Spandau in August alone. These types of residential projects are therefore not only a step towards better living conditions, but also a necessary measure to cover the urgent need for accommodation for refugees.

political measures and prevention options

Politics can play a central role in prevention and coping with such situations. Reduction of causes of escape through international cooperation and targeted development projects could reduce the need for many people. At the national level, strategies for faster and more efficient integration and increased financial support for cities that take refugees could increase the potential for successful projects such as this in Pankow.

Long -term solutions should also include the creation of living space, which is accessible to refugees and groups in need to minimize social tensions and strengthen communities. Such a policy could prevent the pressure on existing accommodation resources from increasing and ensuring a more sustainable future for all Berliners.
