New era for GEW Berlin: Resignation of the long -time chairman Erdmann

Experience and responsibilities in the Education and Science Union (GEW) in Berlin

The long -time state chairman of the Education and Science Union (GEW) in Berlin, Tom Erdmann, has announced that he will withdraw from his office. This was done due to the handling of an illegal audio recording of a GEW session, which he had stored digitally and made available to other board members. This led to a significant loss of trust on the state board.

After an extraordinary board meeting in which the situation was discussed in detail, an application for immediate resignation by Erdmann was rejected. This meant that Erdmann asked the question of trust, which also did not find a majority. He regretted regret about his misconduct: "I made a serious mistake that I deeply regretted." Erdmann's commitment recognized his co-chair Martina Regulin and emphasized his strong entry for the union members.

Erdmann has been on the executive state board since 2012 and took over the chair in 2015. In recent years he has been increasingly exposed to internal conflicts and spoke of profound differences within the union.

In addition to the internal tensions, the GEW faces external challenges. Since 2022, the union with warning strikes has been making headlines for smaller classes in schools and loses members to the competing union Verdi, especially in the daycare sector. Critics accuse Erdmann to be responsible for the strike strategy perceived as ineffectively.

The time of Erdmann's resignation within the GEW is controversial. Some board members are calling for his immediate withdrawal because a chairman loses credibility on call. Despite disagreements, however, Erdmann emphasized that the GEW would continue to fight for good working conditions and just education. "The task of my successors: inside and the entire board will be to solve the internal conflicts in GEW Berlin," he said.

Die GEW Berlin, with around 30,000 members, faces a demanding phase. Erdmann's resignation marks the end of an era and the start of a new tour that has to overcome internal differences and successfully manage the current strike and tariff conflicts. Erdmann confidently expressed that his successors can meet these requirements inside. In November, the union will choose a new leadership that is supposed to represent the interests of the members and drive projects.
