Munich introduces new 'Muc' indicators: Do other cities need that too?

Munich plans to introduce a new license plate for vehicles that should contain the letter "MUC". The need for this results from the limited number of possible combinations in the allocation of license plates. This problem is particularly affected by vehicles such as motor scooters or motorcycles, in which only a narrow license plate can be attached. The district administrative officer Hanna Sammüller-Gradl argues that especially for e-scooters, the additional abbreviation "E" remain even fewer options for combinations.

The introduction of the new license plate "MUC" should be possible from October. However, the city of Munich must submit the corresponding application to the Federal Ministry of Transport and prove that the license plates are required. If this proof is provided, the Free State of Bavaria will apply. The Federal Ministry of Transport will then decide whether there is actually a lack of labeling options in Munich.

The problem of limited combinations affects not only Munich, but also other big cities such as Berlin and Cologne. There are currently no plans in Berlin to introduce another distinction indicator in addition to the letter "B". Nevertheless, the number of possible combinations are regularly checked in order to be able to take measures if necessary. There is currently no lack of license combinations in Hamburg and therefore no plans for alternative license plates.

It remains to be seen whether other cities will also consider the introduction of new license plates in the future to solve the problem of limited combination options.
