Garbage festival at Leopoldplatz: Together for a clean Berlin!

On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, a garbage festival will take place in the Berlin district of Wedding. Under the motto “What can we do to make our city cleaner and more livable?” The district mayor of Mitte, Stefanie Remlinger, invites all citizens, environmental experts and interested parties to this special event. The event not only attracts the interest of local residents, but is also part of the #MitteMachtsauber campaign, which advocates for a more environmentally friendly Berlin ( berlin.de ).

The garbage festival is organized by LIFE Education Environment Equal Opportunities e.V. and starts at 2:00 p.m. and ends at 6:00 p.m. on Leopoldplatz. The extensive program offers a stage program with music, theater and poetry slam as well as presentations by initiatives and local actors who are committed to waste avoidance and reduction, sustainable consumption and climate protection.

Activities and participation activities

Various hands-on activities, workshops and creative stations are available for all age groups. Here, participants can receive practical tips for a less wasteful everyday life and exchange ideas and network with other committed people from the district. A complete overview of the program is available on the Mitte District Office website.

A special highlight is participation in the nationwide World Cleanup Day, which takes place on September 20, 2025. This global initiative mobilizes millions of people around the world to take action against littering on streets, parks, beaches, forests, rivers and oceans. Last year, 22 million people in 191 countries took part in this event ( worldcleanup.org ).

The context of the initiative

World Cleanup Day is now anchored in the UN calendar and is part of a global citizens' movement committed to a clean and livable environment. Volunteers are encouraged to actively contribute to the cleanliness of their cities. The World Cleanup Community was recognized for its achievements with the UN SDG Action Awards and impressively shows that collective action leads to positive change.

Commitment to environmental protection is essential. Further information on conserving resources and valuing them instead of throwing them away is available on the website of the Federal Environment Ministry ( bundesumweltministerium.de ).
