Warenhaus Müllerstraße - Information on the development of the building and public participation.

According to a report by www.berlin.de, the Signa Real Estate held an information event on the development of the department store in Berlin-Wedding on October 24th in cooperation with the district office Mitte from Berlin. The building is to be converted from a monothematic use into a multifunctional city module. The winning design of the architecture firm Baumschlager Eberle combines department store and office use with living space and common good -oriented space. The district councilor for urban development and Facility Management, Ephraim Gothe, emphasizes the importance of the preservation of Karstadt on Leopoldplatz and sees the conversion project the opportunity to create a more open and sustainable department store that also offers urgently needed living space, offices and non -profit facilities.

The design forms the basis for the project-related development plan III-140-1VE. As part of the early public participation, all citizens are called up to inform themselves about the planning and to give statements. The participation takes place on the website of the Umstadt Development Office and the investment platform Mein.berlin.de and runs from October 30 to December 1, 2023.

Since the announcement of the winning design in May 2023, the planning of Baumschlager Eberle has been further specified. The quality of the further development of the entrance on Schulstraße / Müllerstrasse was particularly emphasized. The district office Mitte from Berlin and Signa work closely together to find suitable tenants for the common good -oriented areas. The start of construction for the new building is planned for mid -2025, and the opening is expected to take place at the end of 2027.

It remains to be seen how the Berlin citizens react to the planned changes and what other decisions are made in the context of the participation. The conversion of the department store will undoubtedly have an impact on the local economy and the urban planning picture in Berlin-Wedding. It will be interesting to observe how the various interest groups react to the planned combination of retail, offices, apartments and common good -oriented areas and whether the conversion will help relieve the shortage of living space in the city.
