Experience diversity: Exhibition on life in Berlin-Mitte starts soon!
In the heart of Berlin-Mitte, the urban space will be staged in a fascinating exhibition in September and October 2025. The district mayor Stefanie Remlinger warmly invites citizens to help create the exhibition “Life in Berlin-Mitte”. This takes place in front of the Tiergarten town hall, at Mathilde-Jacob-Platz 1, and aims to make the diverse experiences of the residents visible. The exhibition elements are both interactive and informative and offer a valuable insight into urban life.
A special highlight is the “Noise Knit” scarf, which illustrates how noises can be perceived in urban space. In addition, a district map is presented that shows residents' personal favorite places as well as ideas for changes that were developed in a workshop. This initiative is intended to provide impetus for urban development and promote the active participation of citizens. The commitment is supported by various local authorities, including the Office for Citizen Participation Mitte, the Volunteer Office Mitte and the Volunteer Agency Mitte.
Ceremonial opening and participation opportunities
The grand opening of the exhibition is scheduled for September 15, 2025 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. An introduction to the exhibition will be offered at 4:30 p.m., while Carsten Spallek, the deputy district mayor and district councilor for social affairs and civic services, will give opening remarks. Urban development representatives invite all interested Berliners to take an active part in shaping their city.
In this context, the Berlin Noise Action Plan 2024–2029, which is based on previous citizen participation, is also important. The main aim of the plan is to reduce traffic noise in order to improve the health protection of the population. The initiative focuses on three core topics: the creation of urban rest and relaxation areas, the T30 concept for noise reduction at night and the volume behavior in traffic.
Participation as the focus of urban development
Participation is viewed as a central component of sustainable urban development. Involving residents in planning processes, such as through citizen forums and workshops, is essential for the design of their living spaces. Such participatory processes have already shown success in Berlin, for example in the Dragonera area in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, where the goal is to develop an integrative and ecologically forward-looking urban district.
These initiatives demonstrate the importance of citizen participation in urban projects in order to develop effective and sustainable solutions. Events such as the upcoming exhibition and the noise action plan provide a platform for dialogue between residents and the authorities and help ensure that citizens' voices are heard.
