Maria Szwecow-Szewczyk receives the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for intercultural use
The translator and bridge builder Maria Szwecow-Szewczyk recently awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. This highest recognition for merits around the common good was awarded for her decades of commitment in the intercultural dialogue between German and Polish citizens.
Ms. Szwecow-Szewczyk studied polonistics at the University of Warsaw and has lived in Berlin since 1985. There she worked as a Polish lecturer at various adult education centers and was also involved as a translator and author.
her particularly remarkable commitment began in the 1980s when she recognized the potential of the Polish market south of Potsdamer Platz. Instead of promoting the traditional market encounter, she founded the German-Polish club to promote cultural exchange.
Through her good contacts with cultural workers in Poland, she organized numerous events, concerts and cultural trips that strengthened the intercultural dialogue. Ms. Szwecow-Szewczyk made partnerships with various facilities and became a fixture in the Polish Kulturberlin.
