Environmental protection in Berlin: Excursion to the wetlands on World Day

On February 2, the World Day of the wetlands will be committed to draw attention to the importance of these ecosystems for biodiversity, climate change and water supply. The United Nations points out that wetlands disappear three times faster than forests and almost 90 percent of these valuable habitats have been degraded since the 17th century. The district councilor for order, environment, nature, streets and green areas, Dr. Almut Neumann, informed about an excursion to four lakes that were created during the last ice age. Participation in the approximately four -hour excursion is free and takes place on Sunday, February 4, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The meeting point is the Kulturhaus Peter Edel in Berliner Allee 125.

The excursion is led by graduate biologist Gunter Martin and leads to the lakes Weißen See, Orankesee, Obersee and Fauler See in Berlin. The White Lake is one of the deepest waters of the city and the namesake of a Berlin district. The Orankesee is known for its outdoor pool and the Obersee houses a popular villa district and the last house of architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe designed in Germany. The lazy lake is a nature reserve in which you can observe 80 species of birds and in which different amphibian species live.

The excursion offers the participants the opportunity to discover and protect the natural diversity and beauty of these wetlands. The event is aimed at those interested in nature and offers a unique opportunity to experience the importance of wetlands for the environment. For more information on the excursion, interested parties can contact the environmental and nature conservation office in Mitte.

The event underlines the importance of the wetlands for ecological balance and the protection of nature in urban areas. It sensitizes the participants for the important role that wetlands play for the flora and fauna as well as for the climate. This special day offers the opportunity to experience the diversity and beauty of nature on site and to work for your protection.
