Moab Mobility Week: Fun and safety for the youngest!

The Mitte district in Berlin is preparing for the “Moabit Week of Mobility”, which will take place from September 22nd to 26th, 2025. Mayor Christopher Schriner announced that the event is aimed specifically at children, students and young people. The week will offer a diverse program that promotes sustainable mobility and road safety.

A special highlight will be a mobile pump track, which will offer the young participants a lot of fun while cycling. A mini course will be set up for the 3 to 6 year old age group to train speed control, balance and reaction skills. The offers are carried out in a safe environment with experienced supervisors. Bicycles, roller boards, balance bikes, scooters and helmets are provided on site so that all children can actively participate.

Diverse offers and special day

The event is organized by several partners, including BegSpo, the Otto playground (Moabit Ratschlag), the Moabit natural science and cultural education association, the Moabit youth traffic school (Wendepunkt) and the Fraunhofer Institute. Funding is provided by the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment.

The offers take place at various locations, in particular at Otto-Platz and the Otto-Playground. The pump track will be open to schools from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the morning from September 23rd to 26th and to everyone from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the afternoon. The bicycle course is also offered on a similar schedule for daycare centers and all other guests.

A special mobility action day is planned for Thursday, September 25th from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. On this day, participants can try out a bicycle repair service (Turning Point), a reaction test from the ADAC and virtual reality glasses from the Fraunhofer Institute. A detailed program overview and information about the funding partners are available on the Moabit Education Association website.

Sustainable mobility and education worldwide

With the “Moabit Week of Mobility”, the district would like to set an example for sustainable mobility, a concern that is also supported at the national level by the Federal Environment Ministry. An example of successful traffic education programs is the MobileKids initiative from Mercedes-Benz, which is carried out worldwide. A successful implementation takes place, for example, in São Paulo, Brazil, in the state-approved Colégio Humboldt school, where children aged 4 to 18 learn to take responsibility in traffic and to travel safely through lessons in German and Portuguese.

In São Paulo, 64 public schools are now part of the program, and the school parking lot has been converted into a traffic training area. The children can apply their theoretical knowledge to practical outdoor challenges. Programs like these demonstrate the importance of road safety and sustainable mobility and highlight the role of education in these areas.
