Middle fights with austerity measures: Household has to be increased by 9 million euros!

Mitte, Deutschland - On May 23, 2025, the district office Mitte published a press release in which the precarious budget situation of the district is explained. District Mayor Stefanie Remlinger found that the currently announced austerity measures are not sufficient to meet the increased savings requirements for 2025. These requirements were raised from around 13 million euros to around 20 million euros.

So far, the district office has only saved around 11 million euros. As a result, immediate budgetary restrictions were imposed. The aim of these measures is to supplement and improve process and cost controlling within the district.

challenges of savings

The decision -making processes for structural savings are difficult by legal duties and guidelines at the state level. This means that the required area savings are very challenging, especially for necessary digitization measures that are related to the New Work concept. Thus, this situation has a negative impact on the increase in efficiency and the modernization of the administration.

Nevertheless, the district office consistently remains in its goal of maintaining the services for the citizens. This applies above all to cultural, child, youth and social offers as well as civil services and the care of green spaces.

overarching savings measures in Germany

In the higher -level context, the federal government plans to advance the renovation of the state budget. As part of the budget for 2025/26, consolidation measures of 8.7 billion euros are to be implemented. This will add up to a total of 54 billion euros by 2029, which should be generated from savings or additional income.

The measures include savings that are to take a third of income and two thirds through spending cuts. Tax measures are expected to bring in 1 billion euros in 2025 and 2.2 billion euros in 2026. Critical savings also include the abolition of the climate monus and cuts in grants and in administration.

These extensive measures react to the largest cost drivers, such as pensions and interest rates. However, the planned savings lead to clear criticism, especially of environmental organizations that warn of the negative effects on the promotion of environmentally friendly projects.

for the Mitte district, which must continue to accept the challenges, the goal remains to offer the citizens an appropriate range of services even in times of savings. More detailed information on the current developments can be followed on the websites of the district and in other press releases.
