Environmental protection in Mitte: All areas will be preserved!

Significant progress has been made in the area of environmental protection in the Mitte district. Like that Central District Office reports, the district councilor for urban development and facility management, Ephraim Gothe, announced the positive results of a current examination of the legal requirements for environmental protection areas. All seven environmental protection areas that were subsequently examined will be preserved, including the areas on Thomasiusstrasse, Reinickendorfer Strasse and the Alexanderplatzviertel.

This decision comes at a time when pressure on the local population is growing due to rising rental prices. The results of the audit enable the district to continue to use environmental protection instruments in a total of 14 areas. The aim is to implement construction measures in a socially acceptable manner in order to protect the resident population from displacement.

New environmental protection areas

In addition to this, this has Berliner Abendblatt reports that two new environmental protection areas, “Badstraße” and “Müllerstraße Nord”, have been decided. These areas contain around 12,000 and 16,600 residents respectively and are intended to provide additional protection against displacement and luxury renovations. The introduction of a social conservation law will place particular focus on combating displacement processes in the housing market. Experts had previously confirmed that displacement processes were likely due to current market developments.

District Councilor Gothe emphasized the importance of these new conservation regulations, which are intended to strengthen the protection of the existing resident population in Mitte. With the new measures, the district will now have a total of 14 social conservation areas.

Goals of social conservation law

Social preservation law, a central component of these efforts, aims to preserve the composition of the resident population for urban planning reasons. According to that Urban Development Office It is expected that the displacement of traditional population groups will not only change the social structure of neighborhoods, but also endanger public and social infrastructure. Infrastructure such as daycare centers and schools are often tailored to specific population groups, so displacement could lead to a loss of diverse offerings.

To counteract this, social preservation law uses measures that limit rent increases and modernizations. Comments on individual tenancy law issues, such as modernization measures and rent increases, encourage the affected tenants to turn to alternative advice services, as the urban development office cannot provide any information in these areas.

The results of the audits carried out and the measures to safeguard the social conservation law will be published on the district office's website in the near future. The social stability of the resident population remains a central issue for the citizens and the administration in the Mitte district.
