Large zoo: beaver and trees in harmony with voluntary use
In the heart of Berlin, where the large zoo represents the green oasis of the city, something great happens! Here nature conservation and urbanity lead an exciting cooperation in order to reconcile the valuable trees and the return of the beaver. A unique project that sets the course for a harmonious coexistence between people and nature!
The challenges in a big city are diverse and often complex, especially when it comes to the protection of nature and the needs of citizens. But now fresh wind comes into play: the lower nature conservation authority, the green area office of the Mitte district as well as the inspiring city natural rangers of the Nature Conservation Foundation are pulling together! On October 25, 2024, around 100 volunteers from WTS Advisory have become active and have attached a protective layer against the voracious beavers-a real nature conservation hero moment!
Green lung of Berlin with an innovative protection approach
The large zoo, often referred to as Berlin's green lungs, is not only a wonderful resort, but also a hotspot of biodiversity. The beaver returns here - and that's a sensation! But while the population is happy about the natural wonder, the beaver is a serious threat to valuable tree species. So how can we make sure that both, beaver and tree population, have a harmonious existence in this urban ecosystem?
The answer is in a clever concept! With a special protective coating made of quartz sand, trees worth protecting are protected. This innovative covering keeps the beaver in chess and directs them to less endangered areas of the park. Dr. Laura Damerius and Simone Völker, the two rangers, explain that this is a targeted beater steering, supplemented by feeding - a clear plan for protection and sustainability!
And what does district councilor Christopher Schriner say? He is enthusiastic about the harmonious cooperation and emphasizes: "This commitment shows how nature conservation works in an urban space when different interests are combined." A commitment that not only protects the environment, but also preserves the historical legacy of the city!
Together for a green future
On the way to the future, the plan is clear: the protective measures will be further expanded and the partnership between the participating authorities is intensified. The aim is to protect both the imposing trees and the spotted swimmers and to secure their coexistence in the long term while people can enjoy the zoo. An exciting journey that shows what is possible when everyone pulls together!
These committed measures are not only the local team, but also the international commitment to biodiversity. The Nature Conservation Berlin Foundation is passionate about maintaining and restoring the biological habitats in the capital. In an age in which biodiversity is increasingly at risk, every targeted step - like the Green Social Day - takes a strong sign of the preservation of our nature.
This exciting nature day will not only protect the trees, but also create new alliances for nature conservation. What a moving example of modern environmental protection in the middle of Berlin!
