Decolonization in Berlin-Mitte: New name for Nettelbeckplatz
Decolonization in Berlin-Mitte: New name for Nettelbeckplatz
The district mayor of Mitte, Stefanie Remlinger, informs in her current press release about the continuation of the decolonization of public space in Berlin-Mitte. Specifically, it is about renaming the Nettelbeckplatz in Wedding. A advisory committee will select the future name of the square from over 532 names. Three meeting dates are planned for this, and there will be a public information offer for resident and traders on Friday, May 31, 2024, on the Nettelbeckplatz as part of the day of the neighborhood.
The process for finding the name began with an online survey on the Mein.Berlin.de investment portal, in which over 500 entries were made. These have been checked for their formal suitability and are now to be discussed in the advisory committee. It is planned that the advisory committee agreed on three suitable names that will be handed over to the Mitte district assembly.
The Nettelbeckplatz is currently named after Joachim Nettelbeck (1738-1824), who was actively involved in the enslaving and operated colonial lobbyism. The Mitte district assembly has therefore commissioned the district office Mitte to initiate a renaming process (printed matter 3215/V).
This process for decolonizing public space is made by the L.I.S.T. GmbH carried out on behalf of the office for citizens.
The renaming of the Nettelbeckplatz is part of a comprehensive process of decolonization, which deals with the historical roots of names and monuments in Berlin. The discussion about the renaming of the square is also reflected in the discussion of the colonial and sla -decline -up past in Germany.
The following table shows an overview of the most important information about renaming the Nettelbeckplatz:
| Date | Event |

| March 27 | Start of the online survey on Mein.Berlin.de |
