Miersch becomes the new SPD general secretary: on the campaign battle!
Berlin-Matthias Miersch becomes according to information from party circles of new SPD general secretary. The deputy parliamentary group leader and experienced politicians are temporarily proposed as the successor to the resigned Kevin Kühnert, which was unanimously accepted by the SPD's Presidium. Miersch, who has been in the Bundestag since 2005 and has a strong focus on environmental and climate protection, is considered a strict advocate of the energy transition and was significantly involved in negotiations on the controversial heating law with the Greens and FDP. He had recently announced that he wanted to run again for the Bundestag.
Miersch should immediately take on Kühnert's tasks, which withdraws from politics for health reasons. This comes at a critical time, since the SPD only has a year until the Bundestag election and Kühnert was considered an important campaign manager. It remains to be seen whether Miersch will take full responsibility or whether party leader Lars Klingbeil, who has already had experience in this role, steps in interim. Further details of Miersch's appointment can be found on www.radiooleverkusen.de .
