Media Prize of Kinderothilfe: Award for Brave Enlightenment on Children's Rights

Important recognition for children's rights violations in the Berlin Media Prize

On November 15, 2023, attention will be drawn to topics in Berlin that are often in the shade: the violation of children's rights. This is done as part of the 26th media prize of the Kindenothilfe, who honors outstanding journalistic work, which deals with little -respected aspects of child rights. The award ceremony is a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of serious social problems and to arouse public interest.

The three nominated contributions focus on different, but equally serious topics. On the one hand, Sebastian Bellwinkel's report "The Taboo in Taboo - Child Abuse by Women" illuminates a often ignored problem in which the victims often do not receive the necessary support. The second nomination goes to Vivian Pasquet and Nicola Meier with their article "Supply gap", which emphasizes the critical emergency in the medical care of children in need. Finally, Shafagh Laghai and Lara Straatmann document the shattering living conditions of children in war zones in “The Martyr Kinder-in the heart of the Middle East conflict”. These topics are not only central to the protection of children, but also for the understanding of social structures in which such injuries are done.

The award ceremony is supported by Svenja Schulze, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development. It emphasizes the importance of such awards in order to increase the visibility of these critical topics and to promote the debate in society. The media prize not only underlines journalistic responsibility, but also reminds of urgency to respect and protect children's rights all over the world.

The jury, staffed by experts from the media and journalism, plays a crucial role in the selection of the award -winning work. The jury members include Jaafar Abdul-Karim from Deutsche Welle and Andreas Cichowicz, editor-in-chief of the NDR television. The prize money of 5,000 euros is another incentive for journalists to tackle important topics offensive and to bring them into public discussion.

The Kinderothilfe itself is one of the leading organizations in the field of children's rights in Europe. It is tirelessly committed to more than 2.2 million children in 36 countries to offer them protection, strengthening and support. The media prize has been awarded since 1999 and has now established itself as a significant voice to defend and support children's rights.
