Maul and claw disease in the Märkisch-Oderland: Red alarm level for animals!
An outbreak of the mouth and claw disease (MKS) in the Brandenburg buffalo herd in Hönow, near the Berlin city limits, has assumed alarming proportions. According to information from the rbb24 , three animals were found in the affected herd of 14 water buffalo, while the remaining eleven were killed due to the typical symptoms. The virus, serotype o, is extremely contagious for claws and could spread quickly in the area.
The authorities have therefore taken immediate protective measures. In order to prevent the potential spread, all paired banks were killed in a radius of three kilometers around the affected pasture, including 170 pigs in an adjacent operation. According to the Minister of Agriculture Hanka Mittelstädt (SPD), extensive tests in the surrounding stocks run to trace the introduction of the virus.
