In a controversial decision, Federal President Steinmeier signed the revised climate protection law, although it has come across massive resistance from parts of civil society and warnings from experts. Both the Bundestag and the Federal Council had already agreed to the law. However, the German Environmental Aid (DUH) has announced that it does not accept this and submit a lawsuit before the Federal Constitutional Court.

The Federal Managing Director of DUH, Jürgen Resch, critically commented on Steinmeier's decision: "The Federal President has hesitated up to the last second to sign the revised climate protection law.
