Massive construction work: S-Bahn lines in Berlin are at a standstill!
Extensive construction work has been underway on the Ringbahn in Berlin since the beginning of August 2025, which entails significant restrictions for passengers. The Berlin S-Bahn has announced several affected lines, which will severely impact mobility in the northeast of the city. From Monday morning, August 28th, additional closures and expanded rail replacement services can be expected, especially for travelers who rely on the S-Bahn.
For line S8 there will be no train service between Pankow and Hohen Neuendorf from Monday night until September 5th. A replacement service with barrier-free buses is available here. There will also be restrictions on lines S2 and S26 as they do not run between Pankow and Karow. Replacement buses will also be provided for these routes.
New construction work and its effects
In addition, the S-Bahn will start its replacement bus service between Blankenfelde and Mahlow from Monday at 4 a.m., which will be valid until September 22nd. The reason for these extensive measures is the construction work associated with the commissioning of a new electronic signal box at Nordkreuz. This modernization is necessary to improve the traffic flow on the Ringbahn.
The S-Bahn recommends using alternative means of transport such as the tram or subway to avoid the closures until September 8, 2025 at 10 p.m. The following applies to further construction work: The replacement service for the Ringbahn and the lines S85 and S8 will be shortened by one station from Monday, so that replacement buses will only run between Greifswalder Straße and Gesundbrunnen in the future.
Long-term construction measures
The current construction work is part of a comprehensive renovation plan, which also includes future timetable changes. For example, from September 8th to September 12th and again from September 15th to September 19th, S-Bahn traffic between Blankenburg and Hohen Neuendorf will be completely stopped. There will also be clock changes on the Ahrensfelde and Ostkreuz connection, some of which will only run every 20 minutes.
Further short-term restrictions are planned for September. Among other things, there will be no S-Bahn service between Bornholmer Straße and Karow on September 12th from 10 p.m. to September 15th, while replacement buses will be provided. This also affects several other lines that are affected by the construction work at the same time.
For a detailed overview of the measures and planned timetable changes, passengers can consult the S-Bahn Berlin website, which offers comprehensive information on current and upcoming construction sites. This information is also available on other platforms that deal with structural restrictions in the transport network, such as the VBB website, which provides a map with the corresponding construction measures.
