Current developments regarding self -determination in the gender entry

The registry office Marzahn-Hellersdorf has recently published important information on the preparation of the law on self-determination in relation to the gender entry. With a decision of the German Bundestag on April 12, 2024, it is now possible to change the gender entry and the first names in the birth register by a personal explanation at the registry office.

The new law will come into force on November 1, 2024. People who want to apply for a change in the gender entry and the first names must announce this three months in advance at the registry office. Registration can be submitted from August 1, 2024. The application can be made for any registry office, but the explanation, after three months and within six months at the latest, must be certified by the same registry office. The new gender entry becomes effective in the birth register, provided there is no other domestic civil status entry, otherwise at the registry office of the place of residence.

If an explanation is to be submitted to the Marzahn-Hellersdorf registry office in Berlin, registration is possible from August 1, 2024. For free help with the registration, the form can be downloaded on the Internet. After submitting the documents, an appointment for the declaration is set.
