Memory of resistance fighters in Berlin: Stumbling blocks for brave heroes
On Monday, September 23, 2024, a moving commemoration project will take place in Mahlsdorf and Kaulsdorf. The renowned artist Gunter Demnig will move two stumbling blocks for Arthur and Frida Weisbrodt, born fishermen at 10:30 a.m. in Greifswalder Str. 49. Afterwards, at 10:55 a.m., a third stumbling block will find its place for Karl Vesper in Briesener Weg 170.
stumbling blocks are small memorial plates that were launched by Gunter Demnig to remind you of victims of National Socialism. They mark the last freely selected places of residence of people who have been persecuted, deported or murdered. So far, 37 stumbling blocks in Marzahn-Hellersdorf.
The laying of these stumbling blocks is the brave history of German communists and resistance fighters. Local organizations such as the Mahlsdorf/Kaulsdorf local association, the folk solidarity and the DGB district association East have actively contributed to enabling this project.
Arthur Weisbrodt, a courageous optician, was executed due to his resistance to National Socialism in 1944. His mother Frida Weisbrodt and Karl Vesper, a committed pipe layer, were also victims of the regime for their political beliefs.
The laying of these stumbling blocks is an important memory of the fact that democracy must be protected and defended. An indication of the past that is supposed to encourage us to actively fight for a fairer and free future.
We thank Dr. Uwe Klett and Dagmar Poetzsch for their remarkable commitment that makes these memorials possible.
