Berlin plans solar offensive: 25% electricity from solar energy by 2035!

The Berlin Senate has decided to extend the "Master Plan Solarcity" by 2030. This is part of a comprehensive plan to significantly accelerate the expansion of solar energy in the capital. According to Nordkurier , at least a quarter of the electricity generated in Berlin by 2035. The solar power content is currently 4.7% and the Senate sees this a "huge challenge", as the governing mayor Franziska Giffey emphasizes.

The current state shows that almost 42,000 solar systems with a total output of 380 megawatt peak (MWP) are installed in Berlin. These systems can supply about 131,000 households with a solar power. The districts of Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Pankow and Treptow-Köpenick, which together operate over 19,000 of the new solar systems together, are particularly active. In the past two years alone, more than 26,500 new facilities have been installed, which has more than tripled the solar capacity since 2020.

funding and incentives

In order to achieve the ambitious goal, further incentives are to be created and advice for potential solar users is expanded. For 2023, ten million euros in funding are planned, with similar amounts in budget consultations for 2026 and 2027. These financial means are crucial to promote the installation of new solar systems, as in the report of Nordkurier .

goals and measures of the master plan

The Master Plan Solarcity, which was originally developed from November 2018 to September 2019 in cooperation with around 30 key players, was aimed at implementing several measures to promote the solar city of Berlin by 2024. This includes recommendations from the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, which has accompanied the process professionally. In March 2020, the concept was finally decided by the Senate. An evaluation of the implementation has already taken place in 2023 to further develop the master plan, such as berlin.de reported.

The solar turn in Berlin not only requires the commitment of politics, but also the active contribution of building owners, companies, associations and planners. In order to master these challenges, cooperation is essential to achieve the big goal of the solar power share by 2035.
