Ukrainian refugees will find new home in the former St. Gabriel Monastery

On February 24, the Russian Federation against Ukraine, which was contrary to international law. On this occasion, Senator Cansel Kiziltepe and the integration officer Katarina Niewiedzial visited the former St. Gabriel Monastery in the Westend on Friday. In March 2022, refugee women and children from Ukraine were protected. In the meantime, 28 families from various cities in Ukraine live in the former nuns cells and build up a new life in Berlin. They organize the care of the children, are in exchange with the neighborhood and receive support for civil society initiatives. All adults work, attend language courses and create perspectives in Berlin.

Community life in the monastery is organized by Alla Belikova-Shoichet, who himself came to Berlin as a refugee in 1996. Today she is the founder of various social companies and a member of the State Advisory Board for Participation. Senator Kiziltepe emphasized that Berlin was a safe port for refugee people from Ukraine and that the integration into the city society is in focus. The support from committed from civil society and state -based state offers are crucial for a successful arrival.

The Niewiedzial Integration Officer emphasized that Germany gave the refugees from Ukraine immediate access to the labor market. Of the approximately 50,000 Ukrainian refugees in Berlin, however, only around 29,000 citizens' allowance receive. It is important not to repeat the past in the labor market integration and not to have well -qualified women stranded in precarious employment relationships.

In Berlin, around 50,000 refugees from Ukraine have now arrived, and around 300 other people are still added every week. The city is working on providing these people as best as possible and offering them a perspective in Berlin. It is important that the integration of these people succeeds in the long term so that they can feel welcome and safe in Berlin.
