Study on Vietnamese immigration presented in Lichtenberg

in Lichtenberg, the Vietnamese community has increased significantly in recent years and is now the largest migrant group in the district. The district office Lichtenberg has therefore commissioned a comprehensive study to explore the background and forms of this immigration more closely. The study entitled "The New Immigration from Vietnam - Perspectives from Berlin Lichtenberg" was made by Prof. Dr. Birgit Röttger-Rössler and her team carried out at the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Free University of Berlin. The results of the study were presented on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, as part of a specialist day in the Lichtenberg town hall.

District Mayor Martin Schaefer emphasized the importance of the Vietnamese community for Lichtenberg and explained that the district would actively address the challenges and opportunities associated with this immigration. The study provides valuable recommendations for action, how the district can set up even better in order to address the needs of the Vietnamese residents.

The study showed that immigration from Vietnam often takes place under precarious conditions and does not run linearly. In addition to legal immigration, dubious ways of immigration are also advertised that lead people into exploitative employment relationships and financial dependencies. The study therefore recommends how the district can support the families concerned to cope with their problems.

A round of discussions during the specialist day offered participants such as district mayor Martin Schaefer and the state representative for participation and integration, Katarina Niewiedzial, the opportunity to discuss the special features of the migration movement from Vietnam and the associated challenges. Both the perspectives of the "new migrants: inside" as well as the specialists in administration and social work were illuminated.

The costs for the study amount to 50,000 euros and are financed from the integration fund of the Lichtenberg district office. The study results are intended to ensure that the district can better respond to the needs and challenges of the Vietnamese community and in the long term an integrative and supportive environment can create for all residents.
