Start of the construction project for rapid rapid connection 9: Scheffelstraße becomes a bicycle route
On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, the construction work for improved bicycle traffic in Scheffelstrasse, which will be part of the planned quick cycle connection 9 (RSV 09 Ost). This connection will enable a quick and safe journey from Marzahn-Hellersdorf via Lichtenberg and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg to Mitte. The cycling strips on Scheffelstrasse are produced between Möllendorffstraße in the east and the S-Bahn bridge in the west with sections of protection. The width of the wheel lane will be between 2.0 and 3.20 meters.
It is planned to give up parking on the edge of the road and instead create around 21 new parking spaces between the trees. The large stone pavement on the side of the road is removed and the road is paved. The completion of the construction work is planned for May 2025. The construction work begins on the southern road and then switch to the north side. During the construction work, the Tram traffic is preserved, while car traffic remains navigable in a direction of travel.
A one-way regulation for vehicle traffic is set up depending on the construction phase to maintain traffic. During the construction phase, cycling and foot traffic is run either over the sidewalk or along the secure edge of the road. At the confluence with the city park, a sidewalk forward is built. Some areas of the protection are obtained removable bollards, and the route will receive a green coating and a red layer on the confluence.
These construction measures are part of a larger plan to expand the cycling network in Lichtenberg and make it safer. Radio fast connection 9 Ost will enable cyclists to get through the city faster and more conveniently and to make traffic more environmentally friendly. The cooperation between the participating authorities and the district councilor for traffic, green spaces, order, environment and nature conservation, Filiz Küllüoğlu, made this important construction work possible.
