Senate decides on container homes for refugees in Lichtenberg
The Berlin Senate set the locations for the residential container program 2.0 to accommodate refugees in the city in its meeting of March 26, 2024. The planned residential container systems are expected to be built in 16 locations in 2025 and 2026 and offer a total of space for up to 6,130 refugees. Four of these locations with a total of around 1,600 seats are planned in the Lichtenberg district.
District Mayor Martin Schaefer (CDU) criticized the selection of the locations. The Lichtenberg district office had already rejected the locations in advance due to the lack of infrastructure, concerns about species and noise protection and the lack of planning law. The district mayor emphasized that Lichtenberg had done exemplary work since 2015 in the accommodation and integration of refugees, and described the Senate's decision as a step backwards in communication and cooperation with the districts.
The four container locations defined by the Senate are: Darßer Straße 153 (Alt-Hohenschönhausen/620 Places), Darßer Straße 101 (Neu-Hohenschönhausen/120 Places), Klützer Straße (Neu-Hohenschönhausen/510 Places) and Storkoower Straße 220 (Lichtenberg/310 Places). The implementation of the residential container program should be made by buying and/or renting container systems.
The criticism of district mayor Schaefer In the choice of location, suggests that the planned accommodations in Lichtenberg could encounter resistance among the population. It remains to be seen how local politics and residents will react to the implementation of the residential container systems.
The following table lists the locations and the respective number of planned places:
