Topping-out ceremony for a new residential project in Berlin: 37 barrier-free apartments!
On August 27, 2025, the topping-out ceremony for a new residential building took place at Archenholdstrasse 19/21 in Berlin. This six-story construction project, which closes a gap in the neighborhood structure, was celebrated in the presence of Camilla Schuler, the district councilor for building and urban development (Die Linke). The property has a total area of 1,390 square meters and will include 37 new residential units.
The total living space of the new building is 3,043 square meters. The apartments vary in size from two to four rooms and are all equipped with a balcony or terrace. What is particularly noteworthy is that 50 percent of the apartments are designed to be barrier-free. The building also has two staircases with elevators that reach up to the fifth floor. An underground car park with 21 parking spaces as well as storage space for bicycles, which can be reached via a car elevator, will be provided for future residents. A garden area at the rear of the house will also provide facilities for recreation.
Sustainable housing projects in Berlin
The development of sustainable housing projects in Berlin is becoming increasingly important. This can be seen in the current construction projects, which increasingly rely on ecological and energy-efficient concepts. According to a report by Development City, ten such residential projects are planned to be implemented in 2025. Particular attention is paid to green roofs and innovative wooden construction methods.
An example of an outstanding construction project is the new building in Barnimkiez in Friedrichshain, which will offer 33 barrier-free apartments and meet the KfW 55 standard. The “BUWOG-Hygge-Höfe” project is being realized in Kaulsdorf, where, among other things, wooden construction aims to save up to 64% CO₂. The “Schumacher Quartier” is also planning over 5,000 apartments using sustainable wooden construction. These and numerous other projects contribute to making housing construction in Berlin sustainable.
Quality seal for sustainable housing
The importance of sustainable construction methods is also underlined by the quality seal for sustainable housing construction (NaWoh). This certificate program is supported by the German Accreditation Body and is intended to increase the quality of residential projects. An online seminar on the topic last took place on October 23, 2024 under the organization of the EBZ Academy. New requirements and adjustments in the certification process were discussed, which play an important role for future construction projects.
Integrating sustainable practices and creating housing that is both high quality and environmentally conscious are crucial factors for future urban development in Berlin. The current and planned projects also reflect this trend and show that Berlin is well on the way to becoming a greener and more livable city.
