Lichtenberg Animal Welfare Prize 2025: Submit suggestions now!
On September 5, 2025, the Lichtenberg district office announced that the Lichtenberg Animal Welfare Prize would be announced for the second time. The deadline for submitting proposals is Sunday, October 5, 2025. District Councilor Filiz Keküllüoğlu emphasizes the importance of community engagement in animal protection. The prize is intended to look for role models who are committed to sustainability and who contribute to raising awareness against animal cruelty.
A total amount of 1,000 euros is available for the award, which is awarded exclusively to committed groups, projects, initiatives, organizations or institutions. The deciding jury, consisting of experts and representatives from the district office and the district council, will evaluate the submitted proposals according to the criteria of sustainability, relevance for Lichtenberg and community participation. The award ceremony will take place on Friday, November 7th, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. in the Kulturhaus Karlshorst.
Application and requirements
Applications should contain information about the commitment, number of participants, time period, scope and existence of the initiative. Suggestions are available via email BzStRinOrdUmVer@lichtenberg.berlin.de under the subject “Proposal Lichtenberg Animal Welfare Prize 2025”. The Lichtenberg Animal Welfare Prize goes back to the district council's printed matter DS/0766/IX.
A look at the previous prices shows the commitment in Germany. Already in 2023, Stephanie “Stevie” Badura won first place with her project Stevie’s Dog Senior Hospice e.V. The Tierschutzbund also lists various winners in recent years who have stood out for their voluntary work in animal protection.
Commitment in North Rhine-Westphalia
Parallel to the announcement of the Lichtenberg Animal Welfare Prize, an animal welfare prize is also awarded in North Rhine-Westphalia. Silke Gorißen, Minister of Agriculture and Consumer Protection, emphasizes the impressive work of animal rights activists. The prize is to be divided among several winners and amounts to a total of 30,000 euros. Applications are possible until September 5, 2025. The focus is on protecting and caring for wild animals and supporting animals in need.
A jury is responsible for both prizes, evaluating the projects and determining the winners. This shows how valuable voluntary work in animal protection is in Germany and how important it is to recognize the achievements of animal rights activists. Those responsible can find out more and apply for these awards on the respective websites: Lichtenberg Animal Welfare Prize and Animal Welfare Award NRW.
