Lichtenberg honors three pioneers: 40 years of Neu-Hohenschönhausen celebrated!

On September 1, 2025, a special honor was held in Neu-Hohenschönhausen. On the occasion of the district's 40th anniversary, the Lichtenberg district office honored three people with the Lichtenberg district thaler. The ceremony took place in the Anna Seghers Library on Prerower Platz. District Mayor Martin Schaefer (CDU) praised the honorees' commitment and acknowledged their significant contributions to the local community.

The people honored are:

  • Henry Böttcher: Für seinen Film über die Geschichte des Mühlengrunds und die Geschichten der Bewohnenden.
  • Thomas Seidel: Für die historische Aufarbeitung der Entstehung Hohenschönhausens sowie seine Medienarbeit in der ARGE IAVM.
  • Werner Schwarz: Ebenfalls für seine historische Aufarbeitung und Medienarbeit in der ARGE IAVM.

History of Neu-Hohenschönhausen

Hohenschönhausen, with its approximately 700-year history, was established as an independent district in 1985. Construction of the new Hohenschönhausen-Nord development area began on February 9, 1984. Previously, the area was part of the Weißensee district. This underwent a fundamental change with the last district reforms that created Neu-Hohenschönhausen and Alt-Hohenschönhausen, both of which belong to the Lichtenberg district.

The development of the district is closely linked to numerous historical and social events. Mayor Andreas Geisel gave a speech on the history of Hohenschönhausen, while contemporary witness Dr. Rolf Meyerhöfer spoke about important personalities such as the first mayor Wilfried Franke. The influence of housing associations such as Howoge, which is actively planning to build new homes in the region, was also highlighted.

Commitment and community

The Lichtenberg District Taler is an important award that promotes the commitment of citizens. Proposals for this award can be submitted by individuals, initiatives or organizations. This strengthens togetherness and community in Lichtenberg.

The history of Hohenschönhausen also has dark chapters, including the deportation of Jewish residents during the Nazi terror. These fates were commemorated with the founding of the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial in 1995. It remains a challenge to preserve the cultural heritage and at the same time promote the development of the district.

Overall, the anniversary shows how much Neu-Hohenschönhausen is shaped by its residents and their commitment. The celebrations surrounding 40 years of Neu-Hohenschönhausen are not only a look back, but also an outlook on the future development of this lively district.

The activities of the district office and the citizens' communities demonstrate a dynamic that will further advance Hohenschönhausen.
