Climate protection in Lichtenberg: New heating control lowers CO2 emissions!

On December 11, 2024, a significant progress in building technology in the Lichtenberg district was presented. A new heating regulation was installed in a total of ten public properties, including schools and administration buildings. These include the town hall, the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium, the Fritz-Reuter secondary school and the Richard Wagner primary school. District City Councilor Camilla Schuler emphasized that these measures can not only contribute to reducing costs, but can also save up to 105 tons of CO2 emissions annually, since many of the affected buildings are either poorly insulated or have a high heat acceptance. The initiative is supported by the European Union as part of the Bene 2 funding, such as berlin.de reported.

insight into school history

The school at the town hall, one of the relevant properties, has a long history: in 1910 it was inaugurated as a "urban higher girls' school" and has experienced many transformations since then. The time of the GDR is particularly remarkable, in which it was known as a polytechnic high school and offered socialist education. Changes in the school structure followed after the turn, but the school building itself remains an important part of the cultural heritage of Lichtenberg. In 1999 the name "School am Rathaus" was officially accepted, which symbolizes the new course of the educational institution, such as schoolamrathaus.de documented.

The installation of the innovative heating regulations not only marks a technological step towards climate protection, but also shows how educational institutions can be integrated into the measures for climate protection. With the implementation of these regulations there is a clear call to responsible and continuous improvement in the energy consumption of public buildings in Berlin.
