Inclusive neighborhood walk on the Orankesee: make barriers visible

Next Saturday, May 4, 2024, the Advisory Board of and for People with Disabilities and the Lichtenberg district office invite you to an inclusive neighborhood walk around the Orankesee. The representative for people with disabilities, Daniela Kaup, will lead the event that takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and begins at the “Orankestrand” tram stop.

District Mayor Martin Schaefer (CDU) emphasizes the importance of the event to point out the existing barriers for people with disabilities in public space. He explains that despite progress there are still many obstacles such as high curbs, narrow doors or missing barrier -free labels. The neighborhood walk should help to raise awareness of this problem and to promote improvements.

Annabel Haas-Krahé, deputy chair of the advisory board of and for people with disabilities, emphasizes that there are still too many barriers in Lichtenberg. During the neighborhood walk, obstacles such as missing handrails or soil indicators are marked with chalk spray. The list of barriers collected is then handed over to the members of the district office and the district assembly.

The neighborhood walk takes place as part of the European protest and action day to equality for people with disabilities, which has been celebrated annually on May 5 since 1992. This year there is a central demonstration in Berlin-Mitte, which begins at 12:00 p.m. on Bebelplatz. Under the motto "Much for inclusion! Live self -determined - without barriers", a rally with stage program and sign language interpretation will take place at the Red City Hall at 1 p.m.

It should be pointed out that the neighborhood walk fails in the rain. If necessary, a sign -up interpretation is provided. Interested parties can find out more on (030) 90296-3316 or on the website of the representatives for people with disabilities.
