Budget 2025/26: Cuts despite record volume in Lichtenberg!
On September 18, 2025, an important meeting of the Lichtenberg District Council (BVV) took place, at which a decisive decision was made on the budget preparation for the years 2025/26. District Mayor Martin Schaefer (CDU) emphasized the central role of the budget for the district's future ability to act. In particular, it is important to fulfill essential tasks, while at the same time cuts are necessary in various areas, such as green space maintenance and civil engineering maintenance. In addition, secondary cleaning in schools will be restricted.
The budget for 2026 is expected to be around 1.17 billion euros, followed by 1.16 billion euros for 2027. Despite an increase of around 200 million euros in the overall budget, the new funds are largely earmarked for transfer payments. However, in some areas, such as youth, families and educational infrastructure, funding should remain stable and not be cut.
Investments and milestones
The investment planning for the district shows clear priorities: The aim is to move the health department to a new building at the Magdalenenstrasse subway station, as well as a new location for the adult education center (VHS) in Hohenschönhausen. Furthermore, it is planned to set up an advice center for women, as well as support the district sports association and strengthen social meeting places in the neighborhoods.
In addition, extensive construction projects are planned, including the new construction of the gardening school and the renovation of the cult school in Friedrichsfelde. These measures are intended not only to improve the quality of life of citizens, but also to contribute to the economic stability of the district.
Participatory budgeting and participation
In parallel to the budget discussion, the BVV also passed a resolution on the list of proposals for participatory budgeting, which underlines the continuous participation of citizens in local decisions. Participatory budgeting, which has been implemented since 2013, enables residents to actively contribute their suggestions to the discussion about the use of public funds. These participatory approaches promote a sense of community and strengthen the democratic structures in the district buerger household-lichtenberg.de informed.
The proposals from the most recent meetings of the monitoring committee show that a variety of topics can be addressed, reflecting the range of interests and needs of the Lichtenberg population.
