The redesign of the green area on Küstriner Straße 11-14 in Hohenschönhausen, Lichtenberg district, has now been officially completed. On November 7th, district councilor Filiz Keküllüoğlu (Greens) opened the newly designed area, accompanied by residents and representatives of the companies and offices involved. The work included not only aesthetic improvements, but also measures to adapt to climate change, such as The newly designed environment between Reichenberger- and Strausberger Straße now offers an improved path connection with a water-bound ceiling and a renovated area in front of the memorial. A total of 2500 snowdrops and crocuses were planted and 27 amber trees were set, which not only donate shadows, but are also resistant to heat and drought. These measures should significantly increase the quality of stay for visitors.
sustainability and climate adjustment in focus
A central goal of the redesign was to improve the quality of life in the area. 160 square meters of area in the root area of the street trees were sealed in order to give this more space for development. The old concrete slab path has been dismantled and new entrances to Reichenberger and Strausberger Straße are to open the area for the residents. The investment amount for the entire project was 450,000 euros, as the district office Lichtenberg announced.
The new benches, some of which are barrier -free, now offer additional seating on spacious granite paving surfaces. Eight new parking benches were installed to offer visitors a place of calm and relaxation. The redesign also takes into account the needs of wheelchair users by creating special installation areas.
A look into the future
The work was not only carried out for aesthetic reasons, but also to make a contribution to the so-called sponge city principle. This means that rainwater can better seep away what is of great importance for the environment and urban development. The city councilor explained that the revision of the lawns takes place in a resource -saving manner by not disposing of the existing soil, but improving. These sustainable approaches are part of a more comprehensive strategy for adapting to the challenges of climate change.
The redesign of the green area in Küstriner Straße is an example of how cities can adapt to meet both the needs of its citizens and the requirements of the environment. The completion of the work was originally planned for spring 2024, but due to unfavorable weather conditions, implementation was delayed by several months. Nevertheless, the new green space is now ready to offer residents a place of relaxation and social interaction, such as Berliner Zeitung reported.
