Against forgetting: reading to commemorate local resistance fighters
Culture of remembrance in focus: Reading "against forgetting" illuminates the resistance to National Socialism
On 18. September 2024 , at 5:30 p.m. , there is a significant public reading at Anton-Saefkow-Platz in Berlin. Organized by the Lichtenberg district office in cooperation with the Fennpfuhl e.V. This reading aims to preserve the memory of the brave people who were persecuted and murdered during the National Socialism period between 1933 and 1945 due to their commitment to freedom and humanity.
The event has historical roots, which until the execution of three resistance members - Anton Saefkow, Franz Jacob and Bernhard Bestlein - exactly 80 years ago, on 18. September 1944 . You and many others who have admitted to your beliefs are thought of in an approximately 90-minute reading. The prominent guests include district mayor Martin Schaefer, Gesine Lötzsch, actress Gina Pietsch and the artist Olaf Ruhl. A wreath laying will also be part of the program to pay the deceased respect.
Martin Schaefer, the district mayor, emphasizes the importance of the resistance group: "The resistance group around Anton Saefkow, Franz Jacob and Bernhard Bestlein is closely interwoven with the identity of the Fennpfuhl district. Their commitment to a peaceful world, democracy and tolerance must be appreciated." Streets are named after the members of this group.
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the execution, the memorial event is also accompanied by further actions. Between September 18, 2024 and May 8, 2025, various smaller events are planned, which take place in cooperation with local initiatives and associations. Above all, the project for the edition of the brochure "Around the Fennpfuhl: Anti -fascists on everyone's mouth" from 2006 is reminiscent of resistance to fascism. This brochure will be available in the Anton-Saefkow library and at schools in the Fennpfuhl.
This reading and the accompanying events are not only a review of the past, but also an important reminder to the current and future generation. They emphasize the values of tolerance and human dignity and encourage you to actively work for a just society. Entry to the reading is free of charge and does not require registration, which promotes the accessibility of the information and memories for all citizens.
