Volunteer heroine Inge Stichler receives Lichtenberg district thalers!

On August 23, 2025, the Lichtenberg district thaler was awarded to Inge Stichler, who has been volunteering for recreational sports in her district for decades. The award ceremony took place in the stadium at Siegfriedstrasse 71 in Berlin as part of an honorary event organized by the sports club Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (SV BVB) 49 e.V. Inge Stichler, who has been volunteering continuously since 1969 and can look back on 60 years of club membership, was honored for her remarkable dedication.

During the event, the district mayor Martin Schaefer (CDU) and district councilor for schools and sports, Sandy Mattes (SPD), particularly praised their commitment, which strengthens the community spirit and cohesion in the district. Stichler's main passion is handball, where she looks after the first women's handball team at BVB 49. In addition to handball, she also loves football, tennis and bounce ball and plays an active role as treasurer of the handball department and auditor of the entire club. The Lichtenberg District Taler often honors voluntary commitments that take place outside of established clubs and organizations, which is particularly worth highlighting.

Volunteering in the district

The monthly recognition of the Lichtenberg district thaler was launched in 2021 to make exceptional voluntary achievements visible. Michael Grunst (Die Linke) awarded the first district thaler of the year to Wolfgang Haensel on January 24, 2022. Haensel learned the importance of his commitment to the Lebensnetz neighborhood meeting point and documents his experiences with photography, which covers topics such as neighborhood help and integration. He is also in the oskar | Active volunteer agency that supports volunteers in Lichtenberg.

In Germany, over 30 million people do voluntary work, and in the Lichtenberg district this commitment is also of great importance for social cohesion. Inge Stichler's award represents many who are involved in various areas and thus make a valuable contribution. The promotion of volunteer work is also supported by tax incentives. The volunteer allowance of 720 euros per year is tax-free and can provide significant support for many volunteers.
