The other look: New exhibition combines photography and painting in Berlin

about everyday life in the GDR - an artistic discovery

The RK gallery for contemporary art in Berlin opened on 6. September 2024 The doors to a special exhibition under the title "The other look - feeling and reality". Until 13. November 2024 can immerse yourself in a fascinating world that illuminates both historical and emotional aspects of life in the GDR.

This exhibition emphasizes the perspectives of three East German photographers, Marion Klemp, Martina Kaiser and Waltraud Grubitzsch , who share their view of the life of the GDR from 1961 to 1991 . Her recordings give a lively insight into everyday life, official events and private moments of the time. The photographs curated by the GDR photo heir agency convey an authentic picture of social reality and the specifically female experiences of this era.

The moving connection between these photographs and the abstracted paintings by the Lichtenberg artist Katja Jandrjasevic is particularly remarkable. While the photographs document the external reality, Jandrjasevics aims at conveying internal feelings and moods. These contrasting approaches create an exciting interplay between the documenting equipment of photography and the emotional depth of painting.

The exhibition not only offers art lovers, but also to the further public the opportunity to think about the past and to look at the history of the GDR through a new, artistic perspective. This special performance also initiates social discourse on life in the GDR, which underlines the relevance of the exhibition.

The RK gallery at Möllendorffstraße 6 in Berlin-Lichtenberg is open from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. , and admission is free. This opportunity is not only an invitation to art, but also a space to think about the multi -layered past and to understand its influence on today's Germany.
