Award for Lichtenberger conversion: The forecourt in the central cemetery

A sensational success for Lichtenberg! The redesign of the forecourt at the Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde at the top-class rainy competition 2024 of the Berlin Rainwater Agency conquered the hearts of the jury in the storm and was recognized as the second best project. This shows how good ideas and commitment go hand in hand to make our city more sustainable and worth living!

Filiz Keküllüoğlu, the passionate district councilor for traffic, green spaces, order, environment and nature conservation (Bündnis 90/The Greens), proudly revealed the news: “The competition that was launched in March 2024 attracted a variety of creative heads - a total of 49 projects were submitted. Under these outstanding ideas, second place!

plans for a green paradise

Large happens on the forecourt, which also houses the entrance to the important “memorial of the socialists”! The renowned office for landscape architecture, Franz Reschke, has developed a concept that is intended to massively increase the quality of stay. Green oases with rich shade of trees and cozy seating are planned, which invite you to linger. And the best: the old large stone pavement is re -installed after a surface processing and ensures that rainwater is no longer derived into the overcrowded sewage system. Instead, it seeps away directly on site!

💧 The redesign is not just a pleasure for the eyes, but a real contribution to a more environmentally friendly Berlin. The forecourt is expected to be completed in December 2025 and will be an important component on the way to the ambitious sponge city strategy in Berlin.

prepared for the future

This project impressively shows how urban development can work together with nature conservation. The forecourt at the central cemetery of Friedrichsfelde will not only be a place of commemoration, but also a green meeting point for all Berliners and visitors. An example that gives courage and shows how sustainable city life can look!
