Photo illustration ID from Saturday mandatory: Berlin outdoor pools tighten safety measures
From Saturday, Berliners have to show their photo ID when visiting the outdoor pools. This new regulation has been announced by the Berlin Baths (BBB) and is intended to serve to enforce the house ban. As a photo ID, both identity cards, driver's licenses and student cards are accepted.
In addition, the security personnel in the outdoor pools are significantly increased. The decision on the use depends on the individual conditions of the bath and the weather. If overcrowding is threatening, the admission is stopped to reduce the number of visitors at the same time. The layer line decides when this happens.
After a closure due to disputes last Sunday, the summer pool Neukölln will open its doors again on Monday. The slides and jump towers can be used again.
For security, mobile guards are set up in front of various bathrooms, including in front of the Kreuzberg summer pool. The police also plan possible video surveillance at the entrances of the outdoor pools in Pankow, on the islander and in the prince pool.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz calls for a determined approach to violent riots in the outdoor pools. He also considers a police operation justified and emphasizes that violence in swimming pools must not be tolerated.
The announcement of ID checks criticized the opposition in Berlin. Klara Schedlich, sports and youth policy spokeswoman for the Green Group, warns of long waiting times and more conflicts. She doubts that the ID checks are effective and instead demands more swimming pools to distribute the rush.
niklas Schrader, domestic spokesman for the left faction, describes the measures as cheap actionism. He does not see why everyone should be punished when it comes to a small minority of bathers. Instead, he demands social solutions and targeted prevention work.
The State School Committee (LSA) is critical of the possibility of falsifying student ID cards. Some students receive correct ID cards, others just a piece of paper that they can fill out themselves. The LSA demands social solutions and sufficient staff in the baths to tackle the causes of the problems.
The AfD faction welcomes the measures of the Senate, but does not yet consider it sufficient. The CDU parliamentary group has already presented a seven-point plan for security in public baths. An upper limit for visitors is one of the demands.
The discussion about ID checks and security measures in the Berlin outdoor pools is related to previous escalations and fights. In the bathrooms in the Prinzenbad, in Columbiabad and in the Pankow summer pool, violent arguments occurred.
According to the interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) and the Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU), the announced measures should ensure more security in the outdoor pools.
