Next Sunday, December 1st, the last free museum Sunday will take place in Berlin, an event that attracts many people interested in culture. This popular initiative, which was launched in July 2021, will be discontinued on the basis of budget cuts by the Senate. The two million euros intended for this purpose in the cultural budget were deleted, which makes the continuation impossible. According to the BZ Berlin , around 2.2 million visitors took part in this special day in the past three and a half years.
Farewell to a cultural institution
The positive effects resulting from this program could not convince enough to secure a sequel. A particularly significant part of the visitors had stated that they would not have come to the museum without this occasion. 63 percent of visitors did not go to the museum on this day, reported the Berlin Cultural Project. The closure of this initiative is seen as a loss for the cultural landscape, although numerous special events and promotions for children are offered as part of the last museum Sunday.
In 2023, however, the state -funded museums in Berlin recorded a remarkable growth of the number of visitors, with around 14.2 million people - an increase of 20.3 percent compared to the previous year. Facilities such as the Technology Museum and the Georg-Kolbe Museum could even outperform their pre-Corona visit numbers. Joe Chialo, the Senator for Culture and Social Cohesion, commented on these developments and emphasized that the museums had successfully won a new audience.
