Leif Randt: Utopian adventures and life in CobyCounty!

On September 21, 2025, the 42-year-old writer Leif Randt meets in an open-air bar at the Kleistpark subway station, which is currently closed. When greeting him, he takes off his sunglasses and invites those present to call him on a first-name basis. Randt's unique style and precise powers of observation make him an outstanding voice in the German literary world. He is best known for his second novel, “Shimmering Haze over CobyCounty,” from which he read for the renowned Bachmann Prize.

His literary work is shaped by his curiosity about the thoughts of his generation. Randt is considered a style-dictating millennial whose works illuminate many facets of youth identity and interpersonal relationships. This also includes his follow-up novel “Planet Magnon”, which was described by the NZZ as a “literary hallucinogen”.

A utopian parable

In “Shimmering Haze Over CobyCounty,” Randt paints a portrait of a place founded by a cosmetics company that promises a life of prosperity and progressiveness. The novel tells the story of Wim Endersson, a 26-year-old literary agent who was born in CobyCounty. Wim's relationship with pianist Carla and his memories of his youth come to life through sensual memories, tragic breakups and exuberant dance parties.

But Wim's harmonious life is shaken when his best friend Wesley leaves town. His mother's prophecy, which leans towards neo-spiritualism, was influential here. A storm is coming and the derailment of a magnetic levitation train is interpreted as a sign. This story is described as the author's first utopian parable and reflects the concerns of popular literature that emerged in the 1990s.

The image of contemporary literature

Pop literature focuses on the lives of young people in their early to mid-20s and describes their experiences with traveling, partying, drug use and the constant use of digital media. Randt succeeds in combining these aspects with characters and scenarios that precisely reflect the zeitgeist. Prominent figures from society are present in various forms in the context of his works.

With his connections to more recent literary movements, Randt continues the discourse on the development of contemporary literature. This serves both an entertainment and an educational purpose and is separated into distinguishable categories. While “demanding” works often receive literary awards, many bestsellers – such as crime novels, thrillers or erotic novels – enjoy great popularity.

With his previously published and upcoming works, Leif Randt positions himself in this exciting literary field and encourages readers to think about their own reality. When Randt speaks of his sister's cat that had to be rescued from a locked room, he uses an allegorical approach that combines both the personal and the socially relevant, which makes his writing particularly exciting.

Randt's works, which are discussed in the context of current literature, are not only a reflection of 21st century culture, but also an invitation to reflect on one's own role in the changing world.

A diverse discussion about Randt's work is possible, not least due to the findings of the Berliner Zeitung, the KiWi Publishing house and insights into contemporary literature. They show the potential that Randt's texts have in the current literary landscape and invite further exploration of his works.
