Kwasigroch moves to Qatar: A new dream for the goalkeeper!
Robert Kwasigroch, the former reserve goalkeeper of Hertha BSC, has completed a move to Qatari second division club Al-Markhiya SC. The transfer was announced on August 12, 2025. Hertha BSC will receive a transfer fee of around 300,000 euros, while Kwasigroch has signed a five-year contract in Qatar that promises him a higher salary than in Germany. Sports director Benjamin Weber of Hertha BSC expressed gratitude for Kwasigroch's commitment to the Berlin club, where he only made one competitive appearance and was loaned out to Fortuna Düsseldorf last season, where he was out for a long time due to a meniscus injury and was also only a substitute.
“I am looking forward to the new challenge and am excited to see what the future holds,” explained Kwasigroch. His move to Al-Markhiya is part of a larger trend that also sees younger players heading to Qatar and Saudi Arabia for better earning opportunities. Player agent Stefan Backs emphasizes that the new markets in Qatar and Saudi Arabia offer earning opportunities that are not available in Germany. Kwasigroch could receive a salary there that is two to three times higher than in the Bundesliga.
Ambitions and national team
According to Ayman Dahmani, the general manager of the Rogon player agency, Kwasigroch has ambitions to become Qatar's national goalkeeper. To be eligible to play for the Qatari national team, he must live in Qatar for at least five years, which is exactly the length of his new contract. In Qatar, athletes are also able to compete for the country through so-called “mission passes” without having to give up their original citizenship.
Al-Markhiya SC, where Kwasigroch is moving, are flashing with big ambitions after narrowly missing out on promotion to the first division last season. The club provides a platform for players to showcase their skills and potentially further develop a career in international football. Kwasigroch's move could be seen as a signal for other talented players to consider similar moves.
Kwasigroch, who sat on the bench in Hertha BSC's last second division opener against Schalke, now has the opportunity to grow in a new environment. The assessment that more and more players and coaches are showing great interest in moving to Qatar or Saudi Arabia is reinforced by his move.
