Art funding 2026: Help for persecuted creatives in Berlin!

The Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion has announced grants to support artists, media and cultural workers for 2026. These grants are particularly intended for people who have been forced to leave their previous countries of residence due to political situations. The application deadline for the funding programs ends on September 25, 2025 at 2:00 p.m berlin.de reports.

A central element of this initiative is the fellowship program, which offers Berlin cultural actors the opportunity to apply for one-year fellowships. The aim is to offer support to those working in the arts, media or culture when starting their professional careers in Berlin. The prerequisite for submitting an application is a personal threat, for example from political persecution or armed conflict, as well as the impossibility of continuing professional activity due to political conditions. The funding amount is up to 2,500 euros per month, with at least 2,000 euros to be paid to the fellow.

Additional funding offers

A supplementary offer is the “Extended Fellowship”, which is aimed at institutions (hosts) that implement a fellowship with a fellow who requires special protection. The aim is to provide follow-up support for fellows in vulnerable situations in order to continue their work under safe conditions. The Goethe Institute adds that if the funding decision is positive, applicants must submit an updated financing plan on the basis of which the funding amount will be determined.

A contract regulates the general conditions of the funding, including the amount of funding and rights of use. The funding amount is paid out in installments and the projects must be accessed by the end of the year. After the end of the project, various documents, including photographic documentation and the final report, must be submitted.

Sustainable promotion of art and culture in NRW

In addition to the Berlin funding programs, artists and cultural workers as well as cultural institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) can take advantage of state funding. These grants cover areas such as visual arts, film, new media, literature, music, dance and theater. In addition, there are cross-disciplinary funding opportunities that also include cultural education, socioculture and diversity. Further information is available on the website of the Ministry of Culture and Science NRW, such as brd.nrw.de reports.

Overall, these programs offer important support for art, media and cultural workers in difficult political situations and strengthen cultural diversity in Germany and beyond.
