Pumpkin madness in Klaistow: 1,034 kilos beat all records!
At the Brandenburg Pumpkin Weighing Championship in Klaistow on September 28, 2025, a new record was achieved: For the first time, a pumpkin weighed more than 1,000 kilograms. Michael Schade and Bernd Paul from Elsholz won with an impressive pumpkin that weighed 1,034.8 kilograms. These successes show the ever-growing fan base that makes the traditional pumpkin weigh-in a crowd puller. Last year, Oliver Grafe from Großthiemig took first place with a pumpkin weighing 905 kilograms, this time he came in second place with a pumpkin weighing 988.2 kilograms.
A total of 70 breeders from Brandenburg, Berlin, Saxony and Bavaria took part in the competition with 74 exhibits. This is a sign of the popularity of giant pumpkin competitions, which not only bring amateur gardeners together but also provide a platform to share breeding techniques and exchange experiences. One of the main goals of the event is to find the heaviest pumpkin that could potentially break the 1,000 kilo mark.
The giants of pumpkin farming
Breeders primarily use the “Atlantic Giant” variety, which is known for its size. In recent years, the heaviest pumpkins have weighed over 900 kilograms, and the increasing number of participants suggests that interest in breeding and competition is increasing enormously. The German record is currently 1,052 kilograms and is held by a breeder from Bavaria. The world record, however, is held by an American at 1,247 kilograms, which illustrates the challenge and ambition of the breeders.
Not only are giant pumpkins heavy, but they also grow quickly under the right conditions. You can gain up to 25 kilograms per day. Breeders have to invest a lot of time and care to create optimal conditions. What is important is a sufficient supply of nutrients, a sunny location with 6-8 hours of direct sunlight and targeted irrigation. Many use special fertilizers and techniques to ensure plant health and keep pests away.
