Criticism of the Future Council: ver.di criticized proposal for radio financing

Today, on January 18, 2024, the Future Council submitted the report deployed by the Broadcasting Commission of the Federal States. Among other things, this report proposes a comprehensive restructuring of the radio, which is viewed critically by the United Service Union (ver.di). Above all, the creation of additional transmitter levels and the proposed annual financing encounter resistance.

As a Berlin citizen, I am particularly interested in how these suggestions could affect the local media landscape. The creation of a new central ARD institution and the departure from the constitutionally secured radio financing could lead to serious changes in the journalistic landscape. The regional strengths and nationwide skills of the ARD channels would be torn apart, which could lead to a change in reporting on local topics and events.

Also the possibility that the proposed annual financing could lead to more savings pressure, raises questions. This could have an impact on the quality and diversity of reporting. But there are also positive aspects that are addressed in the report of the Future Council. The demand for a strong digital platform, on which all media libraries, auditorium content and discourse rooms could be brought together, is a step in the right direction. In a digitized world, it is important that content is easily accessible and platforms are created that meet the needs of the general public.

It remains to be seen how these suggestions will affect practice and how the broadcasting facilities and politics react to it. As a citizen of Berlin and especially as a media consumer, I will follow the developments carefully.
