Kreuzberg is breaking new ground: cooperative secures affordable living space!

An apartment building at Naunynstraße 46/Leuschnerdamm 43, which was inherited to a community of heirs in 2023, is about to have a new future. The heirs have contacted the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg urban development office in order to develop common good-oriented perspectives for the object. With the support of the AKS common good, the self -construction eg was won as a buyer and the purchase was notarized in April 2025, which is an important step for the sustainable use of the house.

Promotion of cooperative residential projects

The state of Berlin supports the cooperative housing market with impressive 41.8 million euros. This aims to promote the purchase of 422 apartments by two cooperatives in order to keep them in a cooperative property and to ensure sociable rents. The planned locations include Naunynstraße 46 and Leuschnerdamm 43 in Kreuzberg. While the Neukölln eG cooperative acquires 396 apartments in the Haselhorst imperial research settlement in Spandau.

The funding takes place via the guideline introduced in 2023 to promote cooperative living. Interesting loans are available that cover up to 90 percent of the eligible costs for new construction and the purchase of existing apartments. Since 2018, 400 residential units in 18 existing objects have been transferred to cooperative property in Berlin. This program aims to protect tenants from displacement and stabilize the housing market, especially for households with a smaller income.

Applications for funding must be made early before the construction begins or the purchase contract is concluded. These applications must be submitted to the program control center of the Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Living.
