Creative design manual for Mierendorff-Island: more green, more life!

The district office recently presented the design manual "Mierendorff-Island Climate Adaptation and Sustainability", which is an innovative approach to the design of public space. With a focus on climate adaptation and sustainability, the manual offers a guide with 18 concrete measures that should contribute to improving the neighborhood. It serves as a help for citizens: inside and the administration to make the implementation of climate adaptation measures more efficient.

The Mierendorff Island is a lively place that is visited by thousands of people every day. From road trees to allotments to the Spree, the neighborhood offers a variety of elements that offer a high quality of stay. Nevertheless, there are also areas with potential for improvement, which are to be addressed in the course of the design manual.

A special focus is on the participatory design of public space. The residents have discussed and determined the development of the Mierendorffrundweg and the island together with experts and the district office for a period of two years: inside the Mierendorff-Island together with experts and the district office. This ensures that the desired changes are in line with the needs of the community.

The shape manual offers clear guidelines for the design of benches, tree slices and rest areas in the neighborhood. In addition, potential areas are identified that should be considered for a redesign. Measures to adjust climate adaptation are also an integral part of the manual in order to strengthen the resilience of the neighborhood compared to the effects of climate change.

Oliver Schruoffeneger, district councilor for order, environment, streets and green spaces, emphasized the importance of the participatory approach in the development of the design manual. By being involved in the concerns and ideas of the residents: inside, it is to ensure that the measures meet the needs of the community and that a uniform appearance of the island is guaranteed.

The implementation of the measures listed in the manual will be gradually carried out in the coming years, whereby the manual is regularly updated. In addition, the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office is planning to create similar shape manuals for other quarters in the district. The goal is to make the public spaces in the district sustainably and adapted to the climate in order to improve the quality of life of the residents: in the long term.

Interested parties can download the shape manual on the district's website and find out about the planned measures. With this holistic approach, the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office is making an important sign of future-oriented and sustainable urban development.
