Conflict of refugee accommodation in Berlin-Dahlem

at Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, the Senate plans to build a container village for up to 260 refugees. This decision is met with resistance, especially at the Free University. The university management was surprised by the Senate plans because it was not informed about it. President Günter Ziegler expressed resentment that the university did not give approval for this measure.

The refugee coordinator of Berlin, Albrecht Broemme, defends the plans and is looking for ways to accommodate refugees. He emphasizes that the creation of living space for refugees is urgently needed and that the university can implement its expansion plans in the near future despite the planned container villages. However, the exact temporal coordination between the construction of the container village and the planned construction project of the university still has to be clarified.

The Senate decided at the end of March to build 16 other container villages in Berlin in order to counter the acute lack of living space for refugees. These containers are to be built in various districts on wasting areas. The ruling mayor Kai Wegner emphasized that the decision to create these accommodations was implemented despite resistance within the city.

The locations for the new container villages mainly focus on the eastern part of the city, which increases the imbalance in the distribution of refugees. Such plans often encounter resistance in elegant districts such as Steglitz-Zehlendorf. The discussion and criticism of the FU about the resistance to the container village illustrates the tensions and different perspectives on the topic in the population.
