Comedian Hape Kerkeling leaves Berlin due to increasing hostility to gays: The atmosphere has become significantly homophobic
HAPE KERKELING, a well -known German comedian, has declared his decision to leave Berlin with the increasing hostility to gay in the city. In the ZDF show "Maybrit Illner", on Thursday evening, he said that he had moved to Bonn with his husband because the situation in Berlin had become difficult. Kerkeling explained that the atmosphere had become significantly homophber, so they had decided with a heavy heart to leave Berlin and return to Cologne.
In the show, moderator Maybrit Illner expressed the impression that despite liberal laws, there was increasing radicality on the streets. Kerkeling compared this with the time of the Weimar Republic and emphasized that despite social progress, there was already homophobic violence at the time. He referred to the sex scientist Magnus Hirschfeld, who questioned the strict distinction in two genders in the early 1920s. Kerkeling emphasized that there was even the idea for a partnering law at the time.
Kerkeling also expressed that he had the feeling that society is today "the evening before something" that he does not want to experience, an allusion to National Socialism that followed the Weimar Republic.
These concerns about homophobic attacks were recently expressed by the new queer representative of the Berlin Senate, Alfonso Pantisano. He expressed his concerns about the increasing number of homophobic attacks in the city. Pantisano stated that it was a queasy feeling to go to Christopher Street Day (CSD), an event that symbolizes the struggle for queer rights. The police have announced that they will strengthen their security measures during the CSD, especially when the visitors leave.
The statements of Hape Kerkeling and the concerns of the queer officer show that despite the legal progress in relation to LGBTQ+rights in Germany there are still homophobic tendencies. It becomes clear that society has to fight this violence and discrimination against creating an accepting and tolerant environment for everyone.
